Parking and Toilets

Information about parking and toilet arrangements at Appleby Horse Fair

Traffic management in Appleby Town Centre during the Horse Fair

Changes to the traffic flow in Appleby town centre will operate during the Horse Fair with the intention of making the network safer for all of its users during the Fair. For more information please see our Traffic Management plan.

Where can I park my car?

Parking within Appleby during the Fair is limited. Motorists are asked to park responsibly, ensuring vehicles do not cause obstruction or create safety risks for other road users and pedestrians.

Designated parking areas are available and clearly identified on the official parking map for this year’s Fair.  We strongly encourage all visitors to use these car parks where possible.

Your cooperation in parking safely and following the guidance provided will help ensure the event runs smoothly and safely for everyone..

Please see the car park and traffic restrictions map provided by the MASCG for details.

PLEASE NOTE: The access bridge to Holme Farm car park is closed. Alternative access will be signposted off the B6542 (the westbound slipway road for the A66) above Appleby Grammar School.

How much is the parking?

The average cost of parking in the temporary car parks in and around the site of the Fair is £10.00 per car, per day.

I am bringing a coach of visitors - where do I park?

Parking for coaches is available at:

  • Appleby Grammar School on Saturday and Sunday - to book a space, please ring 017683 51580
  • Appleby Railway Station - to book a space, please ring 0791 368 1939
  • Appleby Castle – to book a space, please ring 07593 661 7775

There is space for coaches to drop off/pick up, adjacent to the Moot Hall in the town centre.

I have a disabled parking disc - where should I park?

There are some disabled parking spaces adjacent to the Moot Hall in the centre of town, but disabled parking discs are valid for all on street parking in the centre of town. If you wish to park up nearer the field, please speak to the Police on duty.

Public Toilets

Most of the car parks will have portable toilets in them, or nearby. In town there are public toilets in the entrance to the Public Hall and Broad Close car park. There is a disabled toilet next to the Tourist Information Centre. There are also plenty of portable toilets down by the river in the town centre and up at the Market fields and Fair Hill. The Railway Station also has limited facilities.
