Statement from outgoing MASCG Chair, Steph Cordon
“After three years as Chair of the Multi Agency Strategic Coordinating Group (MASCG) for Appleby Horse Fair, the time feels right for me to step down and hand over the role to someone else.
“It has been a genuine privilege to work alongside such committed partners across the MASCG, all united by a shared ambition to make Appleby Horse Fair as safe as possible for everyone involved. I would like to thank all of my colleagues for their unwavering support, professionalism and dedication.
“Over the past three years, I’m proud of the progress we have made together in strengthening engagement with local residents, businesses and community groups, while also continuing to build positive relationships with the Gypsy, Traveller and Roma communities who travel to Appleby each year for this hugely significant cultural event.
“The fair remains an important occasion for the communities of Appleby and the surrounding towns and villages, as well as for the many families who have attended for generations, and it has always been our priority to support them and the Fair in a way that respects and balances the needs of all concerned.
“I’m confident that the role of MASCG Chair will be in very safe hands with Claire Notman, Senior Manager for Communities at Westmorland and Furness Council, whose experience and commitment to partnership working will be a real asset moving forward.
“I’m sure all of our partners in the MASCG, as well as the resident and the Gypsy, Traveller and Roma communities involved in the Fair will join me in welcoming and supporting Claire in her new role and in wishing her well.”
Incoming MASCG Chair, Claire Notman, added: “I would like to thank Steph for her leadership, dedication and collaborative approach over the past three years. She has played a hugely important role in strengthening relationships between partners, residents and the Gypsy, Traveller and Roma communities connected to the fair, while always keeping safety and community well-being at the heart of the MASCG’s work.
“Appleby Horse Fair is a unique and nationally significant event. I’m very much looking forward to taking on this new role and continuing to work closely with all our partners and communities to support the safe delivery of the fair in the years ahead.”
