Advice issued following Equine Influenza outbreak
Due to the recent outbreak of Equine Influenza in the region, we would like to remind everyone planning on attending this year’s Appleby Horse Fair, which starts on Thursday 4 June, to remain vigilant and follow sensible bio-security measures.
Equine Influenza is caused by a highly contagious virus and is transmitted by respiratory droplets through direct horse-to-horse contact and through the air with coughing.
One of the notable features of Equine Influenza is the very quick spread of symptoms in groups of horses.
The virus can spread large distances in the air whilst equipment, hands and clothing can also indirectly transmit the virus.
Clinical signs include:
• Nasal discharge
• Coughing - dry/harsh/hacking
• Fever (≥38.5 C)
• Lethargy/poor performance
• Loss of appetite
We strongly encourage all horse owners and handlers to:
• Ensure vaccinations are fully up to date
• Monitor horses closely for any signs of illness
• Avoid bringing unwell horses to the Fair
• Minimise unnecessary horse-to-horse contact
• Maintain good hygiene practices with tack, equipment and vehicles
• Avoid sharing buckets, feed containers or grooming equipment
We also encourage horse owners to keep up to date with guidance from their veterinary practice and relevant equestrian authorities.
Thank you for your cooperation and support in helping us ensure that Appleby Horse Fair is as safe as possible for all equine participants.
